Sometimes, we would explore a bit closer to home: the school had numerous old outhouses which, most likely, in bygone days, were used as stores for the school’s equipment and supplies. The outhouse's sturdy wooden slatted doors had stood up well over the decades since last purposefully used to the vagaries of the unforgiving Scottish elements, but now, through neglect over these years, were beginning to show signs of submission and readiness to return back to the earth from where they sprung. It was ironic in a way, but the green mossy mould enveloping and slowly devouring them was their last and only protection from those elements.
